Safeguarding Systems
While we live in a richly diverse world, we have characteristics that bind us together. Likewise, while there is no one best safeguarding model, healthy safeguarding systems have shared characteristics.
Healthy safeguarding systems are built on a secure base of compassion and empathy. A healthy system measures its success on the outcomes of children and families. Child safety and wellbeing are recognised as a shared responsibility. A diverse range of stakeholders, including children and families, come together to co-create and deliver a shared vision. Small voices are amplified. Committed multi-agency leaders collectively bring the vision to life by driving improvements and supporting transition. There are clear roles and responsibilities, and everyone is held accountable. Multi-agency leaders role model how to work together to tackle complex social problems and achieve good outcomes. Practice is trauma informed and focusses on achieving meaningful and sustainable change. Multi-agency strategies focus efforts and resources where they will be most effective. Leaders create the conditions to practice and ensure the workforce have the skills and knowledge and resources to make a difference.
A message from our founder
Every child should thrive. Sadly, child abuse and neglect continue to be a pervasive global issue. Every day children suffer physical and emotional harm, sexual abuse, exploitation, and neglect. Many children live in homes and communities that are unsafe and where violence is routine. Many children face the intolerable dilemma of one or both of their parents being unsafe or unable to protect them.
Abuse and neglect have serious life-long consequences. Adverse childhood experiences cast a shadow over the lives of children, resulting in poorer outcomes in all domains. They are more likely to have poorer mental and physical health, lower life expectancy, they are more likely to experience difficulties with interpersonal relationships, have poorer education and employment outcomes, are more likely to be socially isolated, and have overall poorer wellbeing. While the personal cost of abuse and neglect is high, families, communities, and nations also suffer when intervention is late or absent.
Child safeguarding is complex. Success is dependent on the coordination and action of a diverse range of stakeholders. It can feel frustrating when – despite our best efforts – problems persist, and projects struggle to have the desired impact.
There are legions of people around the world that hold children’s best interests at heart. They work tirelessly to keep children safe, to create stronger communities, and build the bonds that connect us. In times of austerity, they are challenged to do more with less. Services designed to help and protect are stretched to their limits as demand continues to grow. In economically challenging times, it is important to coordinate efforts and invest resources wisely to have the greatest impact.
During my safeguarding journey I have had the privilege and opportunity to work alongside children & families, carers, a diverse range of multi-disciplinary professionals, my mentors, and friends, in a variety of contexts around the world. Every person I have met along the way has taught me something of the joys, challenges, complexities, risks, and opportunities of life and safeguarding in diverse contexts.
As a consultant, I work alongside leaders and change makers to co-create a shared vision, build a foundation for change, take action, and evaluate progress and impact. My approach focusses on building capacity and ways of working that can be carried forward to other projects. I combine my safeguarding and development experience with enhanced IT skills to leverage technology and develop innovative solutions to improve the outcomes of children and families.
